Do you know what I think is most depressing about the reaction to the Republican Administration's plan to give $US 700 billion with no strings attached to one guy who can then give it to the rich guys who've dragged the US into a financial black hole in the hopes that it'll somehow save the system (which otherwise WORKS REALLY WELL) from imploding? The other night on the GrodsCast, The Editor could be heard wondering sadly about the attention that the US "election" is being paid in Australia. Australians seem to care more about American politics than our own. Punters who've been watching the West Wing think they're experts on Washington politics. We're the 51st state, said someone.

Sarah Palin and her staff in the governor's office in Alaska choose to try to avoid public scrutiny of their activities by using private email addresses at work, because freedom of information laws enable the public release of the contents of official email accounts as an important check on abuses of power - and they are REPUBLICANS after all, for whom such legal limitations on the privileges of office are merely temporary inconveniences.
