Balneus - June 11, 2008 - 6:53pm

Here is a summary of three reports by Victorian Auditor-General, Mr Des Pearson, that were tabled in the Victorian Parliament this morning.

The reports (quick review of each over the fold) cover youth rehabilitation, progress on the CJEP (Criminal Justice Enhancement Program), and reporting by local governments. Read more »

A win! A small but palpable win!

Balneus - May 30, 2008 - 9:46pm

It’s good to see change in what comes out of a government agency after you’ve made a suggestion. Read more »

Inquiry into Melbourne’s Future Water Supply

Balneus - May 28, 2008 - 9:33pm

The Victorian government will be having an inquiry into "Melbourne’s Future Water Supply" soon, but even though this is really important, and is the subject of major public debate and interest, it looks like you need to register first with enrc@parliament.vic.gov.au first.  The main page is Here and the terms of reference here. The Victorian Competition and Efficiency Commission has an inquiry on enhancing Victoria’s livability, with submissions closing 2008-01-31.  There are a number of very interesting submissions, and it will be interesting to see the Brumby government response.

Victoria leaves the Commonwealth?

Balneus - May 19, 2008 - 7:03pm

Excuse me, but is Victoria no longer part of Australia?  It looks like we’ve already left the Commonwealth by looking at the Victorian Government Media Releases Page that displays releases by date - which uses US format (and makes searching for things on 05/06 or 06/05 moot!). Read more »

Howard-Lite? Not by much!

Balneus - June 2, 2008 - 12:49am

By the look of the Democrat’s dissenting opinion in the Senate Report on the Telecommunications (Interception and Access) Amendment Bill 2008 (6 May 2008), KRudd’s government has already shown itself to be hypocritical, bashing through a bill as having only "minor and technical" changes, despite considering the same bill a draconian invasion of privacy when in opposition. How to measure inquiry quality - thanks JC!

Balneus - May 29, 2008 - 7:57pm

Jacques Chester stole my thunder with a great post over at "The Wonkery" about how an index might reflect the quality of a government (or departmental) inquiry.  We’d love your thoughts over there on what you think should be measured, and what metrics might be useful.

As his post title says, it’s "A little inquiry of our own". Read more »

Federal review of state-based law enforcement integrity agencies

Balneus - May 27, 2008 - 11:06pm

If you are interested in the federal powers to keep state-based law enforcement agencies honest, you might like to make a submission (by 2008-06-26) to the Inquiry into state-based law enforcement integrity agencies by the federal Parliamentary Joint Committee on the Australian Commission for Law Enforcement Integrity. Open survey about Vic Parl Website

Balneus - May 22, 2008 - 3:18pm

The Victorian Parliament Website has a current survey about how good it is.

Personally, I think the Victorian site is far inferior to the federal parliament, the survey is in a particularly closed format, and, what is surprising, is that the survey is not even hosted by government, but by surveymonkey.com. Read more »

Kosky calls for comments - very quietly

Balneus - May 19, 2008 - 6:51pm

Another Clayton’s consultation in Victoria: this time Lyn Kosky, Public Transport Minister, is after comments about "train pain".

Talk about making it difficult to ensure your comments go to the right spot!  It’s almost as if the lack of organization is intentional.  Geeks would say the Minister wants all criticism directed to /dev/null (a.k.a. a black hole).
