Intended quasi-hiatus: Computer Maintainance

The Thinkers' Podium - November 29, 2008 - 6:16pm

I’m going to be spending a lot of my time doing maintenance on my computer on and off for the next couple of weeks. That’s not to say I can’t blog - I should take the opportunity to set up on of my other (rather more retro) computers on the network and blog from that.

I’ve got a heap of accumulated data over a couple of partitions (large video and audio streams mainly - converting between formats and all of that) that need compression and burning. After that I’ve got to defrag a couple of drives, which will take a while (but not as long as the compression and burning by far).

I’m thinking of using JKDefrag, which I believe Neil has been trying. This of course reveals the fact that I’ve been using Windows. Blech… I haven’t enjoyed it much.

I’ve a few partition issues to mull over with dual booting and all that, but within the next couple of weeks I should have a working Linux installation up and running again.

Still, there is the remotest possibility that this may all be delayed with a couple of hardware upgrades. Memory and less likely a new video card. And whatever the result of all this tinkering, it’s going to be plonked in the middle bedroom where I’ve repaired a far more ergonomic computer desk/station and where the wall doesn’t warm up during the day!

I’ll have the bookshelves near to the computer as well, for easier reference!

I’ve got a new printer which I’ve set up in the middle room and when that’s up and running, I’ll be printing out my open resignation from the ALP and sending it off with my sliced membership card. To be reproduced on this blog of course.

All this, and a bunch of other things around the house I’d rather delay and do myself, than get outside help for (I caught the DIY bug last year). That and being a carer as well!

Should give me something Linuxy to write about though. I’ve been pining for some Linux immersion for a while now.
