They are just folks in West Virginia, and they would like Clinton to be president, or at least those voting in the Democratic primary have supported her by an overwhelming margin. Clinton gained a 66.1% to Obama 26.7% overall, and the best results I could see for Obama were in Wheeling which Clinton won convincingly by 59% to 37%, At least there is no candidate sexism in West Virginia. Kool Aid and country songs maybe:
And there is another factor, according to Patrick Healy in The New York Times, that a significant number of ethnic Euro-Americans are not prepared to support an Afro-American candidate. (These are arbitrary classifications given that for example many Afro-Americans are also Euro-Americans, as many Latinos are in fact more Native Americans, even though they can be described as aliens, such are the problems of racist classification schemes. Just ask the South Africans.)
Aside from my flippancy and obvious prejudice, these results are not good news for Obama. The NYT article noted:
The West Virginia results offered troubling signs for Mr. Obama. Although exit polls in other states have indicated that many Clinton supporters, including many whites, would back Mr. Obama in the fall, more than half of West Virginia voters said they would be dissatisfied if Mr. Obama won the nomination, according to the surveys conducted by Edison/Mitofsky.
As the Clinton campaign noted in a strategy memorandum on Tuesday, no Democrat has won the White House without winning West Virginia since 1916. Bill Clinton carried it in 1992 and 1996, but Al Gore and John Kerry lost the state in 2000 and 2004, respectively.
Somehow Obama has to connect with the voters that are now supporting Clinton, although I suppose the dynamics change when it becomes a choice between Obama and Clinton, and the questions relating to the economy and the occupation of Iraq become prominent.
