84 hours and counting

The Voice of Today's Apathetic Youth - April 30, 2008 - 9:09pm

Semefa has been in hospital since early Sunday morning- that's 3 and a half days- and he's still waiting for his hand to be operated on. Poor bugger. Daddy called tonight and told us to find out what it would take to move him to a private hospital... seeing as Semefa has whatever private health insurance foreign students have to have as part of their visa requirements I suppose it should be possible... I mean, how long can they make him wait at the PA? Read more »

'Diary' entry- knife attack

The Voice of Today's Apathetic Youth - April 29, 2008 - 5:48pm

We had a rather more exciting finish to our weekend than we had planned when on Sunday, arriving home to a frantically-ringing landline after leaving our mobiles at home, we were informed by my Mum that Gam's mother had been trying to ring us. Gam's brother Semefa was in hospital. Gam phoned Semefa, who was sitting in Emergency at the Princess Alexandra, and found out he'd been stabbed, or rather suffered a cut to the hand after some psycho attacked him with a knife. He was awaiting surgery because doctors wanted to try and repair some nerve damage to a finger. Read more »

Singapore fights teh gay nuclear family

The Voice of Today's Apathetic Youth - April 27, 2008 - 1:00am

Another reminder of how lovely, civilised Singapore hides a dirty secret in that its government consists of a bunch of anti-democratic old bigots:

A Singapore television station has been fined for airing a show that featured a gay couple and their baby in a way that "promotes a gay lifestyle," the city-state's media regulator said. Read more »

Why I could be a terrorist

The Voice of Today's Apathetic Youth - April 17, 2008 - 8:53pm

This story from Brisbane's toilet paper newspaper, the Courier Mail, serves to remind us of just how ridiculous Australian society has become, and just how our freedoms were undermined during John Howard's reign as Prime Minister. The fear of 'terror' is so pervasive that people can't carry out perfectly normal activities without having someone jump up and threaten them with arrest under some 'anti-terr' law or another. Coronial inquest finds people die doing dumb stuff

The Voice of Today's Apathetic Youth - April 15, 2008 - 11:51pm

Is it just me, or does it seem pretty dumb to hold a coronial inquest to find out why people died while engaging in an extremely risky recreational activity? Read more »

Killing our rivers

The Voice of Today's Apathetic Youth - April 12, 2008 - 11:10pm

What the hell is happening to the Murray river?Tortoise-killing sea worms infesting the river.Taxpayers' money being spent buying water for basic, vital environmental flows (shouldn't that water already belong to us rather than Cubby Station or other unviable farmers?)

Common sense hemp

The Voice of Today's Apathetic Youth - April 9, 2008 - 5:13pm

Finally, NSW is going to allow farming of industrial hemp. The ban on farming hemp was ridiculous- it's a crop far less greedy for our scarce water than cotton, and has a multitude of uses. Now if only Cubby Cotton could be shut down in order to put more water back in the Murray-Darling system...

New anti-development petition for Northbank Multiplex plan

The Voice of Today's Apathetic Youth - April 5, 2008 - 8:02pm

Someone on Facebook sent us a link to a petition against the Multiplex North Bank development being run by National Trust Queensland. With over 400 signatures it's more successful than our previous crappy internet petition effort, so we urge anyone who doesn't want the North Bank Multiplex monstrosity to go ahead to sign the petition here.Petition closes on the 9th of May, so get in and put your signature there NOW :)

Electric kettle

The Voice of Today's Apathetic Youth - March 30, 2008 - 2:21pm

Just over a year ago we 'cashed in' some of our FlyBuys points for a Breville stainless steel cordless kettle. Over the past couple of months, dodgy things have been happening- the first sign was the kettle's automatic switch-off/thermostat mechanism, for when the water has boiled, seemed a bit temperamental and slow. Sometimes it would switch off when the jug boiled, other times it would keep boiling and boiling and boiling until it either finally switched off itself or I would get worried and switch it off manually. The Liberal Party vs the average Australian

The Voice of Today's Apathetic Youth - May 13, 2008 - 10:30am

I've been a bit slack on the blogging, being so busy, but I couldn't let this story go untouched:

THE Liberals remain in disarray over their position on the future of family payments and the baby bonus, with many MPs defying the party's leaders and supporting the introduction of means-testing.

Patrick, you funny bastard...

The Voice of Today's Apathetic Youth - May 8, 2008 - 8:21pm

A couple of days ago I was chatting to Patrick on msn and he offered to send us some of his sourdough starter- he's a pretty handy baker of bread these days. In due course, the parcel arrived. When parcels arrive at our complex, because they're too big to fit in the mailboxes, they get left on a bench in the foyer, where everyone just checks the parcel to see if they have any friends (or porn...). Guantanamo inmate becomes suicide bomber
